Burkhard studied bioinformatics at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. He then joined the IPK in Gatersleben where he also received a PhD in 2012 for his contribution to the barley genome project. Subsequently, he moved to Norwich where he spent his postdoc using genomic tools to facilitate improvement of plant disease resistance.
He has contributed to several plant genome projects and developed pipelines for rapid gene discovery, especially in context of disease resistance. His tools were pivotal for the identification of numerous novel genes.
