Welcome to Advances #38 – Summer 2025

It’s the 38th edition of Advances, our bi-annual John Innes Centre science magazine, showcasing the incredible people and science at our institute.

It feels like we are in the midst of a seismic shift, a moment of real change and progress in plant and microbial science. Researchers are now within touching distance of eradicating a disease that has blighted humanity, using technology pioneered and developed right here in Norwich. Read more about Virus Like Particles and polio in our feature article.

Machine learning and AI are innovations that are touching more areas of our lives, and our scientists are at the forefront of finding out what they mean for plant and microbial research. I recommend reading their expert reflections.

We are on the cusp of seeing precision-bred plants hit the mainstream (and the shelves) in England for the first time, following the passing of secondary legislation earlier this year. This monumental step has taken the dedication of a great number of people in our organisation and beyond. You can read more in our feature on policy at the Norwich Research Park.

We are also heralding a new era at JIC as I leave my tenure as Director. This will be my last Advances, and I am honoured to have led this incredible institute over the past few years. I have spent a happy and successful career here as part of a vibrant, diverse and like-minded community.

I am delighted to be handing over to Professor Cristóbal Uauy. I know that he will take our science and infrastructure to new heights, driving our vision forward to promote healthy plants, healthy people, and a healthy planet.

During my retirement, I look forward to staying up to date with institute news and progress, and becoming a proud alumnus of the John Innes Centre.

Professor Graham Moore FRS

Director of the John Innes Centre
