DNA Helix

My research concerns the structure and mechanism of DNA topoisomerases and associated proteins, in order to further our understanding of key biological processes in which they are involved, and to harness this knowledge for the development of therapeutic agents.

Current projects

  • Structure and mechanism of type II DNA topoisomerases (DNA gyrase, DNA
topo IV, DNA topo VI, etc.)
  • DNA topoisomerases as drug targets - the molecular basis of antibiotic action
  • Novel strategies for developing antibiotics - exploitation of insect gut bacteria
  • Roles of topoisomerases in plants (Arabidopsis gyrase and topo VI)
  • Understanding supercoiling-dependent DNA recognition
