Walter Hung

Visiting Scientist Predoctoral researcher

Walter’s current work investigates how Phytoplasma effectors reprogram central plant metabolism to modulate host growth and development.

His research interests centre on host-microbe interactions, particularly molecular plant-microbe interactions (MPMI), and the origin of endosymbiosis.

Walter’s previous work explored the evolution and molecular crosstalk between symbiotic bacteria and their hosts—including plant endophytes and coral symbionts—with a particular focus on metabolism within organelles such as chloroplasts and mitochondria.

He is also passionate about translating fundamental science into practical applications. Through ongoing research on Phytoplasma effectors, the aim is to gain deeper insights into these complex mechanisms, which may offer novel opportunities not only for integrated plant disease management but also for advancing plant health and productivity in future agriculture.
