Caroline uses biochemical and structural biology approaches to investigate plant-pathogen interactions.

Plants have intracellular immune receptors, NLRs, which recognise pathogen effectors and confer disease resistance.

Specifically, Caroline works to understand interactions between rice paired NLR receptors and Magnaporthe oryzae effectors, hoping to contribute to the eventual development of a rice plant with wider disease resistance.
