Next Generation Infrastructure

Healthy Plants, Healthy People, Healthy Planet is the joint vision of the John Innes Centre and The Sainsbury Laboratory to secure a safer, healthier and more sustainable future through the power of plant and microbial science.

It provides a long-term strategic vision for our research, outlining how we will address key global challenges through the power of plant and microbial science.

Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI) is the programme that enables us to deliver this vision.

By working together in a new, collaborative, interdisciplinary and technology-driven way, we aim to tackle and overcome the biggest threats facing the world, making the scientific potential of today meet the global challenges of tomorrow.

To do this we have secured UKRI Infrastructure Fund investment to develop our campus, allowing us to take the next steps to bring this vision to life. Construction of this world leading hub has already begun.

The HP3 vision is more than just a building – it’s also about new ways of working, including:

  • Better integration – particularly bringing the technology platforms together to allow new activities – and ‘lower the walls’ between research groups.
  • More collaboration – for JIC and TSL, but also space for people to come and work alongside us
  • Increase the training programmes and courses we can provide.
  • More support for knowledge exchange, partnerships and collaborations

The NGI programme is a key part of delivering the HP3 vision, establishing a world-leading hub for UK plant and microbial research and innovation.
