Lettice Digby: cytologist
In 1901 Digby entered the Royal College of Science, Kensington (later Imperial College of Science and Technology, London) to study zoology. In 1905 she was awarded the College’s Huxley Medal. After graduation she worked as a cytologist in John Bretland Farmer’s laboratory (until 1914). Her published work (co-written with Farmer) included cytological studies of ferns and in 1913 ‘On the dimensions of chromosomes considered in relation to phylogeny’ in Philosophical Transactions.
