Research Assistant

Pulses are important in agriculture due to their nitrogen fixing properties, and peas are a nutritious, delicious and sustainable protein source for the expanding human population.

Elaine is currently supporting the work of Dr Ahmed Warsame identifying genetic loci associated with the chemical and nutritional properties of peas. For example, phytic acid is an iron absorption inhibitor, and it is hoped that this study will contribute to the development of pea phenotypes with low levels of phytic acid and hence high levels of bioavailable iron.
