Adriana works on a project in collaboration with the University of Manchester and the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.
Several WHO essential antibiotics also have high commercial interest, but can only be produced using the modification of natural products. That is, a part of the synthesis is carried out by a microorganism, but to obtain the final compound, several additional modifications are needed, carried out by chemical synthesis.
The aim of Adriana’s project is to generate a microorganism that is capable of biosynthesizing such antibiotics in one step, by direct fermentation. This will involve the engineering of non-ribosomal peptide biosynthesis in addition to metabolic engineering of primary metabolism.
