Research interests

My main interest is to elucidate the genetic mechanism responsible for variation in vernalization response in Brassica oleracea

Vernalization is important in agriculture, allowing the development of spring and winter sown varieties and thus extending the geographical range of many crops. the genus brassica includes species with many morphological forms that are cultivated for use as vegetables, oils, fodder and condiments, and much of this morphological diversity can be attributed to variation in flowering time.

This programme is closely aligned with the Dean group which is investigating how and why some Arabidopsis genotypes need vernalization to flower.  Elucidation of the mechanism controlling this variation in Brassica will allow us to determine why some Brassica varieties  are more or less responsive to different periods of cold and hence more or less susceptible to the fluctuations of the British weather.
