Burkhard is a bioinformatician with expertise in sequence and genome analysis.
Currently, his main focus is on the characterization and cloning of NB-LRR type resistance genes.
These genes typically work by triggering a hypersensitive response to plant pathogens, resulting in plant resistance.
In this regard Burkhard works on improved methods to annotate members of that gene family and to analyse data from NB-LRR–targeted sequence enrichment (RenSeq).
In a larger context these studies contribute to provide pathogen resistance to our major crops.
