Research Technician (Saunders lab)

Applications are invited for a Research Technician to join the Laboratory of Dr Diane Saunders.

The Saunders group works on a variety of emerging and re-emerging plant pathogens using a broad array of techniques that include molecular genetics, biochemistry, plant pathology, cell biology, genomics, transcriptomics and data mining to improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms at the plant pathogen interface.

The role

The main purpose of this post is to provide technical support to two research projects:

  1. Analysing host specificity of the yellow rust pathogen on various cereal hosts
  2. Examining the prevalence of the different stages of the lifecycle of the wheat yellow rust pathogen and other related rust species in the UK

The post holder will assist with sample recording, pathogen infection assays and scoring these pathology tests performed across an array of cereal hosts in the laboratory.

In addition, the post holder will assist with the extraction of DNA and RNA from field-collected infected plant tissue and carry out molecular analysis to identify the rust species.

This project provides an exciting opportunity for the candidate to work in a multidisciplinary research group in the Crop Genetics department at the John Innes Centre.

The ideal candidate

To be considered for this role, candidates should possess three A Level passes or equivalent, including Biology or similar subject. A BSc in Biological Sciences (or similar) would be desirable. They should have a good working knowledge of molecular biology and good computer literacy. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Previous experience of working in a laboratory environment is also essential.
