An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant to join the Hutchings Group at the John Innes Centre, working on cutting-edge science in the field of Molecular Microbiology.
The Hutchings group work on the specialised metabolites made by Streptomyces species and closely related actinomycete bacteria, which include more than half of all known antibiotics. They are particularly interested in the chemical ecology of these bacteria and their natural products and the environmental signals and signalling systems that control their production.
For example, antibiotic-producing actinomycete bacteria interact with insects and plants and protect them against infection by pathogenic bacteria and fungi in return for food and housing. This is called a defensive mutualism (mutually beneficial symbiosis) and there is good evidence that the host can activate production of useful specialised metabolites by these bacteria.
We want to identify the signalling systems which sense these signals and control specialised metabolism so we can activate their production in the lab. This will help us find new and useful natural products, including new antibiotics, and will also us develop plant probiotics to protect important crop plants against disease.
The successful candidate will support the day to day running of the laboratory and assist PhD students and postdocs with their experiments. Training will be provided in state of the art techniques and you will have the opportunity to undertake your own research into the role of Streptomyces bacteria and their antibiotics in natural ecosystems.
The ideal candidate
You will have a BSc or equivalent in biology and experience of working with either Streptomyces bacteria or with wheat. A PhD in microbiology is desirable but not essential.
