Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Laboratory of Professor Barrie Wilkinson at the John Innes Centre based in Norwich, UK.
The Wilkinson Lab is an inter-disciplinary team that includes chemists, biochemists and microbiologists working on the discovery and biosynthesis of natural products (NPs), and their biosynthetic engineering. They have a particular focus on anti-infective molecules and additionally study the molecular targets & modes of action, and self-immunity, of antibiotic NPs. They also study certain virulence mechanisms of Gram-negative bacteria.
The candidate will join an interdisciplinary team in Molecular Microbiology at JIC focused on the discovery of new natural products and in understanding their biosynthetic pathways. We recently isolated a new family of fungal natural products that are structurally related to known bacterial toxins. In this project we aim to identify the gene cluster responsible for their production and delineate their biosynthesis.
The ideal candidate
The successful applicant will be equally comfortable in performing both natural products chemistry and molecular genetics experiments using fungal systems. They will be experienced with state of the art metabolomics tools and in compound structure determination, and will be familiar with the use of genome mining tools for gene cluster identification. The application of these new natural products will be explored in collaboration with a network of scientists in both academia and industry.
Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,625 to £38,575 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a fulltime post for a contract of 23 months.
Interviews will be held on 9 August 2019.
Please note, this post does not meet UKVI requirements to provide Tier 2 visa sponsorship.
