OpenPlant Programme Manager (Osbourn Group)

Applications are invited for a Programme Manager for OpenPlant, to be based at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK.


This position is part of the £13M OpenPlant Synthetic Biology Research Centre, a large collaborative project led jointly by the John Innes Centre in Norwich and the University of Cambridge.

The Programme Manager will be based at the John Innes Centre and will work closely with Professors Anne Osbourn (Director, OpenPlant Lab, Norwich) and Jim Haseloff (Director, OpenPlant Lab, Cambridge) to enable the successful delivery of the scientific and strategic goals of this large and complex project.

The role

The post holder will work closely with Professor Anne Osbourn and other scientists at the John Innes Centre and the Earlham Institute, Norwich, to co-ordinate and enable the successful delivery of the Norwich-based parts of the OpenPlant programme.

A key part of the responsibilities of the post holder will be (with Professor Osbourn) to liaise closely with Professor Haseloff and his team to co-ordinate, integrate, trouble-shoot, evaluate and report on the progress of the overall programme.

The post holder will also be expected to take an active role in OpenPlant engagement activities. The successful candidate will be provided with opportunities to develop their skillset during this assignment, by way of training programmes, coaching and mentoring.

The ideal candidate

The successful applicant will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, will be able to work as part of a team and to organise others, and will be capable of organising and scheduling complex tasks and creative problem solving.

A PhD or equivalent in biological sciences or a related discipline is essential. Experience of effective science engagement, policy regulatory systems and/or social science research is desirable but not essential. Experience in administration and team management and also of organising events (meetings, workshops, training courses) would be beneficial but is also not essential.

Additional information

Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,250 to £38,100 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post for a contract of 12 months.

Note, this position does not meet UKVI requirements to sponsor a tier 2 visa.
