Ruth Franklin

Year in Industry Student Molecules from Nature

Throughout Ruth’s year at the John Innes Centre she has been learning the various techniques used in molecular biology to identify and artificially edit genes.

In Professor Cathie Martin’s lab, Ruth is working under Matthew Downie to assist in deciphering various gene interaction complexes that are responsible for trichome formation and development in tomato.

Investigating these genes will hopefully open doors to exploiting trichome growth in ways that are beneficial to current agricultural practice, as well as human health. This may be through increasing pest resistance of crops, to help improve food security.
