Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) and Septoria Tritici Blotch (STB) are major fungal diseases in wheat that cause significant crop losses in temperate regions.
No complete genetic resistance against either disease has been identified to date.
Some host genes function to promote pathogen success, termed susceptibility factors. Deletion of susceptibility factors could offer potentially durable resistance against FHB and/or STB.
Roshani seeks to use wheat mutant resources to identify and regine susceptibility factor-containing loci for FHB and STB.
To achieve this, she will use a systematic approach of identifying disease resistances in successively smaller deletions. The results will provide valuable information for improving resistance against FHB and STB.
