Dr Rachel Goddard

Postdoctoral Scientist Plant Health

Rachel works on a Newton Fund research project which is part of a partnership between the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and several UK research centres, with the aim of increasing wheat production in Brazil.

Specifically, she is investigating the genetic basis of resistance to Fusarium head blight and wheat blast, which are two economically important diseases of wheat.

These pathogens severely affect wheat heads with direct damage to the grain, both in terms of quality and yield.

Rachel aims to identify sources of resistance to these diseases and develop new high-throughput marker assays to enable plant breeders, both in Brazil and elsewhere, to incorporate high levels of resistance to these two diseases into future wheat varieties.
