Many genes are developmentally regulated and they have their expression switched between active and silenced states.
Pawel has always been fascinated by the mechanisms and impressive fine-tuning in biological modulation of gene activity.
He is currently working on answering the question – how do cells know, the activity of which genes to switch?
His efforts in Dean lab focus on two new components associated with gene silencing pathway and non-B DNA structures at promoter region of FLC. Both mechanisms have potential to target general regulatory machineries to the specific genes in the genome, so the cells do not mess up their developmental program.
