Michael Pointer

Research Assistant Plant Health

Michael is interested in questions around food security and has worked trying to understand spacial dynamics of pest insect populations.

At the John Innes Centre, he is working on minimising wheat crop losses in East Africa through project MARPLE, a mobile diagnostics kit designed to enable strain analysis of wheat yellow rust pathogens in the field.

With rapid identification of new rust strains it is hoped that the increased threat of large crop disease epidemics that they pose can be mitigated, minimising the loss of wheat crops and protecting the livelihoods of farmers.
