Louisa Perry
Research Assistant
Streptomyces bacteria naturally produce antibiotics that protect plants from pathogens in return for resources.
Louisa is supporting research in the Professor Matt Hutching’s laboratory focusing on Streptomyces interactions in the wheat endosphere.
Their research involves:
- Exploring antifungal compounds produced by Streptomyces bacteria
- Investigating the bacterial profile of the barley microbiome compared to wheat
- Identifying wheat root exudates and their related effects on Streptomyces colonisation in the root microbiome.
- Exploring the evolutionary symbiosis of Streptomyces in the early land plant Marchantia
Understanding these interactions could lead to developments in the protection of crops from diseases.
