Javier is working on Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidae (PsaV), a major threat to New Zealand kiwifruit orchards.
In collaboration with Zespri Kiwifruit, this project will examine how the naturally-occurring population of kiwi-associated Pseudomonas bacteria responds to PsaV infection, and exploit this knowledge to discover and characterise novel anti-PsaV treatments.
The project aims to isolate kiwi-associated Pseudomonas bacteria for subsequent characterisation, to then identify strains that can effectively fight back against PsaV infection. Javier will also analyse the natural products that these bacteria use to suppress PsaV.
