Dr Sibyl Batey

Postdoctoral scientist Molecules from Nature

Natural products produced by microbes are a major source of pharmaceuticals, used to treat everything from minor infections to life-threatening diseases.

However, new and improved varieties are needed to tackle the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.

Sibyl investigates the chemistry and biology of new microbial natural products from diverse sources, such as the nests of leaf-cutter ants. She uses a combination of chemical analytical methods (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and LCMS), X-ray crystallography, metabolite analysis, molecular biology and bioassays.

Her research aims to elucidate how these natural products are made and how they act against their targets.
