Biography

During the night photosynthesis is not possible, so plants need to store energy during the day in order to sustain their metabolism through the night.

Interestingly, different plant species use different compounds for this. While in Arabidopsis the major storage compound is starch, in wheat the major storage form is sucrose.

Matthias is currently investigating why different species rely on different compound and what the consequences of these differences are.
