Abigail Alford

Postgraduate Researcher Molecules from Nature

Abigail’s work centres on antibiotic discovery from microorganisms.

Antibiotic resistance is becoming a big problem in todays society and threatens the very foundation of our health care system.

To combat this new antibiotics are urgently needed. However, many potential antibiotic gene clusters within microbes are switched off or silent and do not produce antibiotics within the lab.

Abigail’s work focuses on using techniques such as heterologous expression and gene modification to synthetically produce these silent gene clusters and validate their products as potential new antibiotics.

Currently she is working on producing a range of lantibiotics synthetically from a modified cinnamycin system
