JIC participates in the NRP Nuffield Scholarship Scheme which provides local sixth formers with a four-week vacation placement as an opportunity to gain direct experience of research on the Norwich Research Park.
The Nuffield Scholarship Scheme provides an opportunity for sixth formers from local schools to gain direct experience of research at the John Innes Centre. Through a four-week vacation placement, they gain a valuable insight into the way science is carried out and what is involved in research. They get a chance to put into practice skills learnt at school/college and to acquire new ones - scientific, ICT and communication skills; working with others and being part of a team; taking initiative and responsibility for their own work. The scholars have an enjoyable and rewarding experience that will be highly valued by future employees and admission tutors at centres of higher education.
Candidates, nominated by their schools, are selected by JIC's ad-hoc committee. The scholars are selected on the following criteria: academic excellence and recommendation from school; perceived benefit to be derived from a 4-week research "experience" at JIC/TSL; as wide a range of schools as possible. Scholars accepted on the scheme are required to write a brief project report and complete a feedback questionnaire. Certificates are issued to all scholars.
