The full images can be downloaded by clicking on the previews. The 3D images are in extended TIFF format, and have been produced from confocal data using ImageJ (download ImageJ from http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/ - thanks to Wayne Rasband of NIH). We recommend viewing these images with ImageJ, which can be used to make rotating projections (we have loaded a few rotations to illustrate this) and to view the images plane by plane. (For the 3D images the in-plane pixel spacing is approximately 0.2µm and the inter-plane spacing about 4 times this.) These images have been optimised on a Macintosh computer - you may need to adjust the brightness/contrast for your computer. We are happy for you to use these images for teaching, talks or reviews, but please acknowledge our papers or this website.

Scanning EM picture of a developing wheat spike. Each spike has many spikelets attached to a central stalk.

Section through a wheat spikelet. The anthers are the 4-lobed structures. The meiocytes develop in the centre of each lobe (called a locule).

Wheat anther broken open to show the meiocytes.

Section through a wheat anther locule early in meiosis; the inner ring of nuclei are meiocytes at the zygotene stage of meiotic prophase I.
