EMS treatment and germination

In October 2006, we did
treatments with EMS at a range of concentrations to
check for germination rate. The seeds were incubated for
14 hours in the EMS and then washed ten times before
spread on soil.

Germination percentages
indicated that the optimal mutation rate/survival was in
the 0.25-0.40% interval. We therefore used the seeds from
the 0.25%, 0.30% and 0.40% for the M1 population.

growth and harvesting

Plants were grown
individually in 1-liter pots over the winter of
2006/2007 and bagged by JIC horticultural staff.
Threshing was a big job,
skillfully and efficiently carried out by Lucy Hicks,
Tilly Eldridge and Pauline during summer 2007.
