Research in the Department of Metabolic Biology
Our
research is within three, interlinked themes:
Primary
Carbon Metabolism,
Natural
Products and Plant
Nutrition.
Within these themes we seek to provide an integrated view of plant metabolism. We wish to understand
core metabolic processes
the evolutionary origins and functional significance of diversity in plant metabolism
the interactions of metabolism and nutrition with development, plant-microbe symbioses, and responses to biotic and abiotic stress
Information gained from study of model plant species - in particular Arabidopsis and the legume Lotus - is being used to develop new ideas about metabolic processes. These ideas are being tested on a wide range of crop plants including barley, pea, forage maize and oilseed rape.
The
Department also houses JIC's
Metabolite
Analysis service.
