Research interests

My team's focus is on various kinds of biological sequence analysis and our activities are divided between research, resource provision and training.

Accordingly we collaborate with diverse teams within JIC and the wider Norwich Research Park: research groups, other support-orientated divisions of CSB, Computing staff, platform technology groups such as JIC/IFR Proteomics and the John Innes Genome Laboratory, and others.

We specialize in proteomics informatics, molecular phylogenetics and protein sequence/structure analysis. I am currently also involved in projects in the increasingly important fields of metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. Other recent contributions of the group to projects include the Arabidopsis cell wall proteome; elucidation of Brassicaceae genome-duplication events by phylogenetic analysis; and phylogenetic studies of transcription factors implicated in cell pigmentation and morphology in flowers of Antirrhinum and relatives. I also have a particular interest in non-globular protein domains, especially coiled coils, and maintain collaborations with colleagues at the Universities of East Anglia, and Bristol.

At JIC we maintain a wide range of bioinformatics software tools and databases to support sequence analysis, and are currently developing systems for the institute's new parallel computing cluster.

Since 2009 I have been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for development of the EMBOSS package (the European Molecular Biology Open Software Suite).
