A play depicting the struggle of women scientists in the early 1900s

Performed by Liz Rothschild & Syreeta Kumar
Directed by Sue Mayo

Nora Barlow, Dorothy Cayley, Caroline Pellew, Becky Saunders, Rose Scott-Moncrieff, Muriel Wheldale and many more. Lost names. Who were they? How do they fit into the genetic puzzle? This play explores the fragments of their stories that we have against the backdrop of their exclusion from academic life and their working relationship with William Bateson, the first Director of the John Innes, himself a marginalised figure from mainstream science at that time. They formed their own scientific community and the groundbreaking work that ensued was crucial in the development of modern genetics. Seen through the eyes of a contemporary scientist we see how this story reverberates today.

Liz Rothschild is a performer, writer and director who thrives on making hidden voices audible. Her writing involves detailed historical research bringing science and the arts together. In 2007 she wrote and toured nationally in Another Kind of Silence, one person show about the environmentalist Rachel Carson. Her other works include Behind You, a play about death and grieving, Barnstorm, the story of an old tithe barn and Branching Out, about a community forest project.
