Friends of JIC events calendar15 launch of National Science and Engineering Week in NorwichFurther detailsVenue: The Forum, Norwich Hosted/Organised by Dawn Barrett Laura McGillivray, Chief Executive, Norwich City Council will officially open National Science and Engineering Week in Norwich 16 Blooming SnapdragonsFurther detailsVenue: The Forum, Norwich Hosted/Organised by Dawn Barrett a play portraying the untold story of the struggle by women scientists to be allowed to work in labs, study and get paid for their research; there will be performances morning and afternoon together with an evening performance on Thursday 18th March. Performances will be 10:00 - 11:30; 13:00 - 14:30; evening performance on 18th @ 18:30 18 Genetics DayVenue: The Forum, NorwichHosted/Organised by Dawn Barrett Dr Kens Genetics Show, DNA extraction and other DNA related activities Sessions at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00 Sessions begin at the times stated above with the science show “Genetics – Are you Taking the Pea” by Dr Ken, the Juggling Geneticist, which starts with Mendel and ends with GM. Yr 10 students and above can then explore the exhibition and activities including: Inside DNA exhibition and 100 Years of Genetics at the John Innes Centre, watch a demonstration of Gel electrophoresis, have a go at Micropipetting and Gel loading, look at GFP and BFP GM bacteria displayed under UV, have fun with cardboard cloning, DNA bracelets, Genetic Taste test strips and a Giant Cell jigsaw. There will be careers information available and the opportunity to find out about The Genome Analysis Centre. The Cube (a room in the Forum) will be available for schools to base themselves in should they want to make a day of it and go to one of the Blooming Snapdragon shows on the same day.
20 Science in Norwich DayVenue: The Forum, NorwichHosted/Organised by Dawn Barrett Family science discovery day; hands on activities, exhibitions and displays for all ages Time: 10:00 - 16:00 A chance to find out about what some of the 2700 scientists in Norwich do in a range of displays and activities from the John Innes Centre, Institute of Food Research, University of East Anglia, Inspire Discovery Centre and their Science Café, Bayer Crop Sciences, The Genome Analysis Centre, The Sainsbury Laboratory, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Teacher Scientist Network, and watch a science show from Science Made Simple at 11:00 and 13:30. 22 The Beagle Project comes to NorwichVenue: JIC Conference CentreHosted/Organised by Dawn Barrett exhibition, displays and talks all linked to Charles Darwin's journey on The Beagle The Beagle Project – Monday 22nd March in the John Innes Conference Centre, Colney Norwich http://www.thebeagleproject.com/aboutus.html At 10:00 for Key Stage 3, from 12:30 for Key Stage 4 and at 18:30 for the general public The Beagle Project is building a modernised HMS Beagle and there will be a model of the Beagle, an interactive globe illustrating the voyage, exhibitions on Darwin and research students talking about their evolution related research followed by a talk from one of the projects instigators Dr Karen James from the Natural History Museum.
