Training and Career Opportunities

As a centre of excellence in plant and microbial science research the John Innes Centre is always seeking to attract, train and retain high quality staff. Our staff include not only scientists and students but also workers in a diverse range of other disciplines.

Opportunities for Schools

The JIC offers a wide range of educational opportunities including work experience, visits, workshops and mentoring.

Our insight days include Health and Safety, Microscopy, Genetic Modification, DNA and genetics.

Work experience is provided for year 10 pupils.

Inside Science is a 3 day workshop for gifted and talented students that has been running for four years.

Our Nuffield Scholarship Scheme provides local sixth formers with a four-week vacation placement as an opportunity to gain direct experience of research on the Norwich Research Park.

The John Innes centre is also the home of the acclaimed Teacher Scientist Network (TSN).

Collaboration between science, art and writing to enhance the educational experience has been developed through the SAW trust (SAW).

Undergraduate Opportunities

The Undergraduate Summer Research Training Programme will host 15 students for 8 weeks.

Additional opportunities to gain experience of working in the research environment are still available through our Vacation Bursary scheme.

Postgraduate Opportunities

The JIC offers a wide range of postgraduate opportunities for students including M.Sc. courses run in conjunction with the University of East Anglia, and PhD studentships in a variety of research areas.

Postdoctoral Opportunities

JIC constantly recruits postdoctoral researchers to its science programme and offers opportunities for postdoctoral research in many different disciplines.

Many of our early-career scientists participate in the JIC Postdoctoral Training Scheme as Postdoctoral Training Fellows (PDTFs). This scheme operates under the BBSRC’s Postdoctoral Training and Career Development scheme.

Through the JIC Postdoctoral Training Scheme we aim to enhance and enrich the research experience so that PDTFs become stronger, more competitive candidates for future career positions.

Fellowship Opportunities

JIC Postdoctoral Opportunities Scheme

The JIC Postdoctoral Opportunities Scheme offers promising postdoctoral scientists from a variety of disciplines the opportunity to further develop their current research interests, or embark on a new line of research. The scheme provides bursaries allowing exceptional postdoctoral scientists from the UK or abroad to make short visits to the Centre to meet scientific project leaders, discuss research possibilities and explore fellowship applications. This scheme is particularly targeted towards scientists interested in fellowships through the EMBO, HFSP, Marie Curie and similar schemes.

The Career Progression Fellowship

The JIC Career Progression Fellowship Scheme offers an opportunity for outstanding JIC postdoctoral researchers to develop as independent researchers for up to 2 years with the view to securing a BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship, Royal Society Research Fellowship or similar Independent Fellowship as a critical step in developing a career as a research group leader.

Five-year Independent Research Fellowships

JIC welcomes expressions of interest from scientists who would like to apply for five-year, Independent Research Fellowships (BBSRC David Phillips, Royal Society) to be hosted at JIC. In support of this JIC holds an annual Independent Fellows Day targeted specifically at scientists interested in the five-year fellowship programmes, considering both new applications and the transfer of existing Fellowships to JIC. Tenure-track

Research group leaders who are at early stages of their careers are recruited to a Tenure-track Project Leader position, as part of the Junior Faculty at JIC. The Tenure-track Project Leaders receive mentoring and training to support their career development.

In Summer 2010 JIC will unveil a new purpose built, training lab, IT/seminar suite and blue sky room.

This new facility will enable JIC to provide outstanding educational training to staff, pupils and students in a state of the art setting.
