BBSRC Research Fellowships Competition

The 2010 BBSRC Research Fellowships Competition has been announced with a closing date for applications of 30 September 2010, 4pm.

Proposals are invited for the following BBSRC fellowships to start during the latter part of 2011:

These prestigious fellowships aim to support outstanding early-career scientists who wish to establish themselves as independent researchers. Up to 10 fellowships are available for scientists who at 1 October 2010 must not exceed ten years in total spent in active postgraduate research studies and postdoctoral research employment.  Please see the Fellowships Handbook for full eligibility criteria.  Awards are for a period of 5 years and carry a personal salary and a significant research support grant to cover the costs of the research that is to be undertaken.

Up to 2 fellowships are available to support early-career researchers wishing to be based at any BBSRC Institute, including Roslin, IBERS and TGAC.  The applicant’s research programme should address the area of “food security”, please see the BBSRC website for full remit details.  Eligibility for candidates is the same as for the David Phillips Fellowship scheme.

These fellowships aim to support scientists wishing to undertake new directions in their research.  Applicants seeking to develop interdisciplinary dimensions by integrating new techniques or methodologies into their research are particularly encouraged.  Up to 5 Fellowships are available for scientists who are full-time members of academic staff of a UK university and who at 1 October 2010 will have worked for a minimum of 5 years in their current or similar post. Awards are for a flexible period of 1-3 years and include a research support grant to cover the costs associated with the proposed research development activities, such as the consumables costs of learning a new technique in a host laboratory. (Note:  Roslin and IBERS are eligible for this scheme).

Up to 4 Fellowships are available for scientists who wish to spend a period of time in collaborative work at another institution.  Proposals should address the area of “food security”, please see the BBSRC website for full remit details.  All BBSRC scientists based at any BBSRC Institute (excluding Roslin and IBERS) at Band E and above are eligible to apply.  Applicants should be on an open-ended contract with a minimum of 5 years in their current or similar post.  Awards are for 6-12 months and include a research support grant to cover costs associated with the proposed activities.

Up to 5 fellowships are available for highly skilled research and technology leaders with a PhD (or equivalent professional experience) to transfer their skills and experience to BBSRC-funded centres, institutes and academic departments.  Awards are for 2 years FTE and can be flexible, e.g. 4 years at 50% FTE.  Applicants should have at least five years of industry experience working in research, technology or engineering roles and not have current or recent employment in a university or research institute.

CLOSING DATE: 30 SEPTEMBER 2010.  PROPOSALS RECEIVED AFTER 4PM ON 30 SEPTEMBER WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.


Important:  applicants should ensure proposals are submitted to their host institution’s Je-S submitter/approval pool well in advance (a minimum of 5 working days) of the published deadline.  This enables institution checks to be carried out before final submission to BBSRC.
