JIC Entomologists scoop award at BBC Gardeners World LiveJune 2008 The John Innes Centre’s Entomology display was awarded ‘Best Space Stand’ at the BBC Gardener’s World Live! Exhibition, which was held last week at the NEC in Birmingham. The display, entitled ‘The JIC Pest and Disease Clinic’ gave visitors the opportunity to learn about the role of the Entomology facility within JIC and discuss any plant pest problems they were experiencing. The interactive, hands-on display allowed visitors to use state of the art microscopes provided by Vision Engineering to view live specimens of many of the different ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bugs that can be found in our gardens. Visitors were also encouraged to bring along any bugs or affected plants for identification and, where possible, the entomology team were able to offer advice in controlling the pests. Besides their annual appearance at the BBC’s Gardeners’ World Live show, the JIC entomologists have appeared in a number of insect-related features on BBC2’s Gardener’s World this year. The team are led by Dr Ian Bedford, who on receiving the award said “We are all extremely pleased and once again thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many friendly and dedicated amateur gardeners. Events like this provide a valuable opportunity for us to communicate with the public and also allow us to explain the important role of JIC as one of Europe’s leading plant science research centres.” The JIC Entomology Facility is a specialised service that maintains and studies, a wide range of both indigenous and exotic insect species. It is staffed by a team of entomologists who are trained in breeding, handling and evaluating insects. Contacts: Andrew Chapple, Press Office Assistant Note to Editors: About John Innes Centre:
