Funding of the John Innes Centre
It is a measure of the John Innes Centre's scientific excellence, integrity
and independence that it has been able, over many years, to attract millions
of pounds in national and international government, charitable and commercial
sponsorship for its fundamental and strategic research.
Public Funding
JIC wins most of its funds in open competition from funding agencies in
the UK and worldwide. More than 50% of our income is from UK government sources,
with the majority from the BBSRC. Charities and the EU 'Framework' science
programmes are our other largest sources of funds.
A proportion of our income, (some staff salaries and studentships,
contributions to new buildings, equipment and other initiatives) is from the
John Innes Foundation.
UK Government sponsorship is provided through two main routes:
1)Institute Strategic Programme Grants provided through the BBSRC on a five-year
funding cycle.
2) other competitive grant award rounds. BBSRC, the Department for Environment
Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Department of Trade and the Department
for International Development (DfID) from time to time invite applications
for funding in areas of research they have identified as important. They may
also respond to proposals for funding of projects.
Working with Industry
JIC welcomes partnerships
with industry where these will add resources and knowledge to JIC
science programmes. Such
partnerships are one of the routes that ensure that the knowledge
and skills developed at JIC are taken up and find applications in
agriculture, food, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. Research
alliances with different companies, which are potential competitors
in some markets, are an excellent example of the high regard that
commercial companies have for the quality of JIC science and the
pre-competitive and independent nature of our research programmes.
