Meet the Ancestors (of the past, present and future)

The ancestors of modern crops were wild plants. Since the beginning of agriculture, humans have selected new plant types that have arisen by 'natural' hybridisation and mutation. More recently directed breeding has been used to improve crops for human use. The continuing development and improvement of crops means that in the future agriculture may provide not only new foods, but also useful raw material for industry.
