The John Innes Centenary year saw a wide range of events take place. Below is a list of the major events, some with accompanying video or photographs.

 

2009

 

AUGUST

• 1st The John Innes Society celebrates the centenary at Merton Park, London Borough of Merton

SEPTEMBER

• 9th History of Genetics Conference
• 9-11th Genetics 100 Years On - aims to provide an in depth examination of genetics in historical terms, as well as contemporary and future issues raised from personalised medicine, stem cells and biometrics to ethics, identity and GMOs. This international scientific symposium will incorporate the Bateson Lecture to be give by Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Paul Nurse
• 12th Alumni Day hosted by Professor Sir John Beringer, Chair, JIC Governing Council
• 13th Discovery Day incorporating Centenary Trails
• 29th - 1st Inside Science Workshop for Gifted and Talented students
• 30th Schools Microscopy Day

OCTOBER

• 14th - 16th Annual Science Meeting and Staff Party
• 15th Friends of JIC @ St Joseph's Parish Centre, Sheringham (watch a short video)
• 26th Centenary Beer launched at the Norwich Beer Festival

DECEMBER

• 1st Friends of JIC Annual Lamb Lecture - 'What sex really means' by Professor Steve Jones, UCL (view the presentation)

2010

 

JANUARY

• 26th Discussion supper on The economic impact of plant and microbial science from the JIC - guests attended discussion supper in House of Lords at the invitation of the Earl of Selborne; chaired by Sir John Beringer

MARCH

• 14th - 26th Science Week - Centenary Exhibition at the Forum, Norwich (watch a short video)
• 16th - 19th Blooming Snapdragons - play depicting the struggle of pioneering women scientists @ The Forum, Norwich (watch the complete performance)
• 18th Genetics Day @ The Forum, Norwich
• 20th Science in Norwich Day @ The Forum, Norwich
• 22nd Voyage of the Beagle - exhibition, displays and talks all linked to Charles Darwin's journey on The Beagle @ JIC (watch the presentation)
• 23rd Showcase of JI Young Scientists @ The Forum, Norwich (watch the presentations)

MAY

• 13th Friends of JIC vote for JIs most outstanding scientific achievement
• 24th Official Launch of the 'John Innes' rose at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show

JUNE

• 7th Centenary New Fellows Meeting
• 9th - 10th Cereals Show, Lincs
• 17th A centenary of trial plots and plantings - Friends of JIC event
• 25th - 4th July Journey to the Centre of the Earth – the first 23cm
  BBSRC Institutes, Rothamsted Research, John Innes Centre and the Royal Society Tercentenary; the Summer Science Exhibition at The Festival of Science + Arts at South Bank Centre
