Many laboratories at JIC welcome undergraduates to work on research projects during the summer vacation. Students typically work in a laboratory for around eight weeks during the summer vacation. This provides an excellent opportunity to gain first hand research experience in an internationally respected laboratory and is particularly useful for undergraduates who may be considering taking up a PhD studentship after they graduate. The ideal time for this experience is during the summer vacation following the second year of an undergraduate course.
The John Innes Centre, the Sainsbury Laboratory and the Genome Analysis Centre run a new Summer placements programme that provides both UK and non-UK students with a unique opportunity to spend the summer working in one of these three prestigious research centres .
Gain research experience in plant and microbial sciences. Open to students from any scientific discipline. Find out more about the International Undergraduate Studentship Programme.
Recruitment onto this programme will be limited so you may also wish to consider applying for an individual Vacation bursary (see below).
For these schemes potential applicants should contact a JIC Project Leader working in an area of interest to them to enquire if that laboratory has any suitable research projects. The student can then work together with the prospective supervisor to apply for appropriate funding.
Applications should ideally be made in January/February for positions the following summer. Most schemes have closing dates in February or March and they usually require a joint application by the student and the prospective supervisor. There are a number of sources of possible funding listed below.
