Supervisors & Research Areas

The John Innes Centre and Sainsbury Laboratory have over 50 research active supervisors who are internationally recognised as experts in their fields. Together they have an outstanding publication record of highly-cited papers in high ranking scientific journals many of which involve the work of students in their labs. Intending students should first agree a topic of research with a project leader who will act as their primary supervisor. Supervisors with funded positions can be viewed under current opportunities.

Supervision

Students are supervised by small dedicated supervisory teams of one or two supervisors, an adviser who provides independent academic advice and support to the student and usually a senior post-doc or research assistant. These teams work very successfully to guide the student through their personal doctorate training. Supervisors meet frequently with their students both informally and formally with the supervisory team as part of the formal process to review the progress of the student.

Supervisor Training

All new supervisors are required to take training before supervising research degree students. Experienced supervisors are also encouraged to take refresher courses and are given briefing sessions to prepare them before they take on new students. UEA runs various training programmes for our supervisors and also has a resource centre.
