PhD Programmes
The John Innes Centre and the Sainsbury laboratory offer three types of PhD Programme:
Four-Year (Rotation) PhDs
Students on this prestigious four-year programme pursue three short research rotations during their first year, with the aim of enhancing their research training, before selecting a supervisor and a topic for their 3-year research project. Students benefit from experience of a wide range of experimental approaches and research environments. There is a general empowerment of student choice in the selection of both research topics and supervisors. Four-Year (Project) PhD
These studentships are similar to the 3-year PhD described below except that the student requires four years of funding of fees and stipend. The first three years will be devoted to experimental work and related training. Students should aim to submit their thesis dissertation during their 4th year whilst also using their final 6 months to complete manuscripts for publication in scientific journals and to pursue other career-enhancing activities. The student has a four-year period of study and no registration only period.
Three-Year (Fast Track) PhD
Fast-track studentships are most suitable for students who already have some previous experience in research. The student requires funding for three years to undertake a research project and write the PhD dissertation. If required, there is an additional unfunded Registration-only year in which to complete writing up and submit the thesis.
