Opportunities for Schools

The JIC offers a wide range of educational opportunities including work experience, visits, workshops and mentoring. Many pupils who have attended work experience or gifted and talented workshops have gone on to be mentored by JIC scientists.

Our Insight Days have developed in response to requests from schools and cover topics such as Health and Safety, Microscopy and  Genetic Modification.

Health and Safety

Additional Applied Science GCSE students hear presentations on health, safety, first aid and science in the work place as well as learn molecular biology skills and tour the facilities.

Microscopy

Pupils at a Miscroscopy Insight DayMicroscopy Insight Days include an introduction to microscopy, hands on activities, tours and demonstrations in the BioImaging Unit as well as a popular image quiz. See Microscopy@JIC website for more information on microscopes and what scientists at JIC are doing.

GM

JIC and Sainsbury Lab scientists host GM Insight Days where the science and history behind GM is explained, demonstrated, discussed and debated!

Year 10 Science Camp

Step into Science and be inspired. Enthusiasm required!

We are happy to announce that in 2012 we will be making some exciting new changes to our Yr10 work experience scheme.

Rather than offering traditional work experience to a small number of students spread throughout the year, we will be running a 4 day Yr10 Science Camp that will run in July 2012.

Science Camp will enable us to host even more students and provide a unique inspirational insight into life as a scientist at the NRP. There will be a mixture of group practical and academic activities in addition to placement in working laboratories for 2 days. Using our new state of the art training laboratory, students will conduct experiments led by the Genome Analysis Centre, debate GM issues and visit the high tech microscopy facilities at JIC. At a final summary session, students will present their laboratory experiences to the group as well as their hosts. Science teachers will also be invited to attend this session and join in the discussions.

If you are really passionate about science as a possible career then this is the experience for you! We expect a large number of applications and the standard to be exceptionally high so please put plenty of thought into making yours one of the best.

Good luck!

Inside Science Inside Science

Inside Science is a 3 day workshop for gifted and talented students that has been running for five years.

The Norwich BioScience Institutes, funded by BBSRC, invite enthusiastic students in years 11-13 from around the region to spend three days on an intensive workshop, hearing about the research we do first hand, meeting students, post-docs and research assistants explaining exactly what it is like to work in science.

Sixth Form Summer Research Opportunities

Our Nuffield Scholarship Scheme provides local sixth formers with a four-week vacation placement as an opportunity to gain direct experience of research on the Norwich Research Park.

Supporting the Curriculum

Microscopy@JIC This website aims to answer many of the questions asked by members of the public and, in particular, teachers and students. It is hoped that it will provide basic educational information and inspire you to learn more about microscopy.

The John Innes centre is also the home of the acclaimed Teacher Scientist Network (TSN). Its main aims are:

  • To support and encourage teachers to deliver up-to-date and relevant science.
  • To encourage scientists to interact with teachers and children.
  • To help counteract the ‘eccentric boffin’ stereotype of scientists.

SAW Trust

Collaboration between science, art and writing to enhance the educational experience has been developed through the SAW Trust.
