Postdoctoral Training Scheme

An important and explicit part of JIC’s mission is the provision of advanced training to PhD students and postdoctoral fellows as well as delivery of benefit through innovation and outreach.

It is custom and practice in life sciences for PhD graduates to undergo a “rite-of-passage” as a postdoctoral researcher to consolidate and build on the PhD qualification and to acquire a broader range of skills, experience and expertise. The rite of passage receives recognition and support in terms of various postdoctoral fellowship programmes, e.g. EMBO, Marie Curie, which often emphasise mobility as a key to personal enrichment, enhanced experience and future competiveness.

JIC reinforces its commitment to the postdoctoral experience by providing resources and funds to facilitate the provision of training and the development of leadership potential. This will enhance the individual’s future competitiveness in the job market for group leader positions in academia, industry or equivalent leadership positions in other arenas.

The explicit recognition of the “rite of passage” and emphasis on preparation for leadership defines the philosophy of the postdoctoral training scheme.
