John Innes Centre receives award for its contribution to Nuffield Scholarship Scheme

July 2nd 2010

The John Innes Centre has been presented with the Employer Award from The Exchange in recognition of their contributions to the Nuffield Scholarship Scheme.

The Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme is an initiative set up by a charitable organisation, the Nuffield Foundation,  that enables first-year sixth formers who are interested in science to carry out a 4-week placement during July and August. The scheme is a nationwide initiative, run by Nuffield Regional Co-ordinators.  In Norfolk, it is administered through The Exchange, a regional SETNET organiser.

The JIC has taken part in the scheme for many years, overseen by Professor Nick Brewin, and latterly by Professor Alison Smith and Helen Ghirardello.  NIck and Alison received the award on behalf of the John Innes Centre from former Norwich City footballer and now Community Ambassador Jeremy Goss at a ceremony at the Forum in Norwich on the 15th June.

Students are selected from as wide a range of schools as possible by a committee of scientists, who look for the perceived benefits to the student, their academic attainment and the recommendation of their school.

More information on the Nuffield Scholarship Scheme at the John Innes Centre, including past projects and details on how to apply, can be found at: http://www.jic.ac.uk/Nuffield/
